This is the trailer of what is to be the first of three 2014 movies for Yoo Yeon-seok. Whistle Blower also stars the always magnetic Park Hae-il and veteran actor Lee Kyeong-young (who stars in 8! movies this year). It's drama in the laboratory like you've never seen before. Except maybe in Dexter's Laboratory but we all know how that ended (or do we?).
Researcher Lee Jang-hwan (Lee) successfully achieved what was deemed impossible: cloning human embryo system. His miraculous discovery earned him wide acclaim. But apparently this is too good to be true. Journalist Yoon Min-cheol (Park) received an anonymous call from a young man claiming that Professor Lee has been fabricating his findings all this time. That man is Shim Min-ho (Yoo), a young researcher who has previously worked with Professor Lee.
This movie is based on the true story of dismissed veterinarian and researcher Hwang Woo-suk who, like Professor Lee in the movie, was involved in unethical research practices in the field of stem-cell research. He went from being a national hero to a national disgrace in a matter of years. The case is pretty interesting and his Wikipedia page (which I linked above) gives quite a thorough breakthrough of everything that happened in his professional career if you're ever curious of it.
Director Yim Soon-rye have quite an extensive resume under her belt, previously directing movies like Rolling Home with the Bull (2010) and South Bound (2012). She also previously worked with Park Hae-il in the movie Waikiki Brothers (2001).
I don't really have much expectations from this movie. I'm pretty sure it's going to be somewhat similar to other Korean thriller movies. Although the subject matter is quite interesting. It's not everyday that society experiences a scientific scandal, so why not make it into a movie? What I want though is a Discovery Channel feature on the actual scandal because man, I need visual truth.
Whistle Blower is set to premier in October 2014. Here's some more stills to get you all hot and bothered. Maybe.

And if stem-cell research manipulation is too heavy of a topic for you (oh boy, science!), then here's some promotional pictures of Yoo Yeon-seok with his The Royal Tailor lady love Park Shin-hye lookin' all cute for Ceci.
