Seo Taiji and Lee Ji-a's Career Comeback: Is It Too Soon?
After much debate with myself about what kind of article I want to write about, I decided to write about this. Korean music legend, Seo Taiji and actress Lee Ji-a recently ended their marriage in a very public divorce which just finalized last July. It's only been a little over a month since their divorce and already the two are planning to make a comeback in their respective careers. But the question is, is it too soon?
To those of you who doesn't know what was going on, here's a little recap if you may about all this. Seo Taiji was part of and leader of the legendary Seo Taiji and the Boys. The group is often credited as the founding father of K-pop as we know of today. Seo, being the leader and the owner of the sole name in the group's name, is automatically deemed as a god in K-pop history. Another notable member of the trio is Yang Hyun-suk, who K-pop fans fondly call Papa YG as he is the founder and CEO of one of the biggest music companies in Korea, YG Entertainment.
Having such an important place in Korean entertainment, most of Seo Taiji's life is known by the public, or so they thought. So it was a huge shock to the whole nation of Korea that Seo Taiji was in a relationship, and a marriage at that with an also public figure, Lee Ji-a who is an actress. Their relationship, with marriage in 1997, remained secret even to Seo's fellow band members. Apparently the two wanted to keep their relationship, divorce and all, a secret till the end of time. But of course they couldn't. It was an even bigger shock because Lee Ji-a was dating fellow actor Jung Woo-sung at the time of the scandal.
Now, two months after finalizing their divorce, both Seo Taiji and Lee Ji-a are looking at possible comebacks. Many have spoken that it's a little too soon for them to get back to work. Two months only allowed them to do so much self-reflection. But I think they can comeback anytime they want. Really. I mean these two are career people and having been working for some time in the industry they must be craving to get back to work.
Out of all things, I feel really sad for them. Not of them, but for. I don't see why a couple has to hide their love from the public, making it seem like it's wrong to love someone, that it's a criminal. Forgive me for ranting a little bit here but as much glory a celebrity gets, I feel bad for them for not having the freedom to love as much as us "regular" people. Love doesn't have to be the romantic love, but also respect or maybe being a fan. Like if a celebrity says they like someone, automatically it means they're dating or they're trying to promote them or something. It's just sad.
I'm glad both Seo Taiji and Lee Ji-a decided to get back to work. Maybe while at work they could slowly mend their broken hearts and get back into the flow of working again. It might take a while until the public could forgive them, if they even have the right to do so, and get back to where they started from. The biggest scandal in Korean celebrity history shouldn't knock them down forever, right?
